The Shorebirds are quite amazing in their colouring and amazingly unperturbed by people, especially considering some of them are endangered and bird groups spend a lot of time and energy trying to protect their habitats and their nests. I was so blown out by the tiny, vividly coloured Rainbow BeeEater and how close it let me get and then just sat there letting me take photos. The Stints are so chubby and fluffy, I actually thought they were baby birds and they were only a couple of feet away. The Pied Oystercatchers are always in a pair when I see them and their bill is quite spectacular. I've been getting closer and closer to the Sacred Kingfisher which is only tiny, but it always is in the same spot and will sit in it's tree for ages and let me take photos. It's always on it's own near an estuary and is really spectacular colours, with a yellow cinnamon breast, a brilliant bluey green on its head and back with a black band from the edge of it's eye around it's neck. The Rainbow BeeEater is even tiny but brilliantly colored orange, green, yellow and black and dart around the trees and the cliff of Belongil Estuary! The photos of the Striated Bittern and Heron were so unexpected because both birds were just suddenly there, the Heron landed right in front of me and the Bittern was so close and near the edge of a waterway, hunting for some lunch. They are very unusual looking and are amazingly coloured but I must say they do have a bit of a nasty look on their faces! |
